Explosion-Proof Cooling for Hazardous Environments
Standard air conditioning units contain sparking contacts, hot surfaces and non-rated electrics — all potential ignition sources in a hazardous area. ATEX air conditioners are engineered to eliminate those risks: sealed compressors, Ex-rated motors and electrics, anti-static fans and enclosures certified for gas and dust atmospheres.
We supply and install ATEX certified cooling for plant rooms, analyser houses, battery rooms, solvent stores, paint lines and process areas across industrial and commercial facilities.
ATEX Zone Cooling Solutions
Every project starts with the zone classification. For Zone 1 and Zone 21 areas we specify fully Ex-rated indoor and outdoor units; for Zone 2 and Zone 22, we match equipment to the gas group, temperature class and dust category defined in your hazardous area assessment.
Where possible we locate non-rated equipment outside the zoned area and duct conditioned air in — often the most economical and lowest-maintenance approach. All designs are DSEAR-aware and documented for your Ex equipment register.
Installation, Inspection & Compliance
Our engineers carry out Ex-rated electrical installation, pressure testing and commissioning in line with the equipment certificates, and provide the documentation your insurer and HSE inspector expect: Ex certificates, installation records and initial detailed inspection.
We also maintain ATEX cooling plant on contract, with periodic close and detailed inspections to keep your Ex register compliant and equipment certification valid.
When to Call an ATEX Cooling Specialist
Typical triggers are a new or re-classified hazardous area, a standard split unit found inside a zone during a DSEAR review, overheating analysers or control panels in a process area, or an Ex inspection that has flagged cooling equipment without valid certification.
Bring your hazardous area classification drawing and the heat load or equipment list if you have them. We confirm the zone, gas group and temperature class, then recommend whether to install Ex-rated units inside the zone or locate standard plant outside it and duct the conditioned air in.
Frequently asked questions
What is an ATEX air conditioner?
An ATEX air conditioner is a cooling unit certified for use in explosive atmospheres. Its electrics, motors, fans and enclosures are engineered so they cannot ignite flammable gases, vapours or dusts present in the area.
Which ATEX zones can you cover?
We supply and install equipment for Zone 1, Zone 2 (gas) and Zone 21, Zone 22 (dust) environments, selected to match the gas group and temperature class of your hazardous area assessment.
Do ATEX air conditioners need special maintenance?
Yes. Ex equipment requires graded inspections (visual, close, detailed) under ATEX and DSEAR. We maintain Ex cooling plant on contract and keep your equipment register and inspection records up to date.
Can a standard air conditioner be used in a Zone 2 area?
No. Equipment inside a zoned area must be certified for that zone, gas group and temperature class. The alternative is to place standard plant outside the zone and duct conditioned air into it.
What documentation do I get with an ATEX air conditioner installation?
You receive the Ex equipment certificates, installation records and the initial detailed inspection, ready for your Ex equipment register, insurer and HSE inspector.
