What is an HMI? — Human-Machine Interface Guide

A Human-Machine Interface (HMI) is the local screen on a control panel that lets an operator see plant status, acknowledge alarms and override outputs. In a BMS context the HMI is the touch-screen on a plant-room panel; in a PLC context it's the panel-mounted Siemens Comfort or Pro-face screen on a machine.

Major HMI Manufacturers

Siemens (SIMATIC HMI Comfort, Mobile, Unified), Rockwell (PanelView Plus 7), Pro-face (SP5000), Beijer Electronics (X2 series), Weintek (cMT), Mitsubishi (GOT2000), B&R, Eaton XV, Red Lion, Trend (TONN8 for BMS).

High-Performance HMI (ISA-101)

Modern HMI design follows ISA-101 / High-Performance HMI principles: neutral grey backgrounds, colour reserved for abnormal conditions, alarm-by-exception (only show what matters), operator-task-focused layouts (not P&ID-mimic). This dramatically reduces operator response time and missed alarms.
