List of BMS Manufacturers & Their Controllers
A vendor-neutral reference list of every major BMS manufacturer and global market, the controller hardware they sell, and the protocols they natively support. Use this to scope projects, plan tenders, or shortlist platforms before commissioning a building management system.
BMS Manufacturers (18)
| Manufacturer | HQ | Controllers | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trend Control Systems (Honeywell) |
| Developed, BACnet/IP, sold and serviced through a national partner network. Dominant install base in commercial buildings and education. | |
| Tridium (Honeywell) — Niagara Framework | United States |
| Vendor-neutral integration framework running Niagara 4. Drives multi-protocol BMS head-ends (BACnet, Modbus, LON, KNX, M-Bus, OPC UA). |
| Siemens | Germany |
| Desigo CC head-end, Desigo PXC field controllers and Climatix application-specific controllers for OEMs (chillers, AHUs, heat pumps). |
| Schneider Electric | France |
| Open BACnet/IP and LON; EBO Workstation is the common head-end alternative to Niagara and Trend. |
| Honeywell | United States |
| Honeywell now owns Trend and Tridium; CIPer is the Niagara-based field/edge controller line. |
| Johnson Controls | United States / Ireland |
| Metasys is the head-end; Facility Explorer is the Niagara-based open-protocol line for the partner channel. |
| ABB / Cylon | Switzerland / Ireland |
| Native BACnet field controllers; Aspect Studio is the BMS head-end / supervisor. |
| Distech Controls (Acuity Brands) | Canada |
| Niagara-compatible IP controllers, strong in VAV / room control, native BACnet/IP and Wi-Fi commissioning. |
| Delta Controls | Canada |
| BACnet International founder member. enteliWEB is the head-end; O3 multi-sensor hub combines IAQ, occupancy and lighting. |
| Automated Logic (Carrier) | United States |
| WebCTRL is the head-end. Tight integration with Carrier chillers and AHUs; native BACnet. |
| Reliable Controls | Canada |
| BTL-listed BACnet Building Controllers (B-BC) and Advanced Application Controllers; popular with the independent partner channel. |
| Sauter | Switzerland |
| Strong in life-science and pharmaceutical clean-room control; native BACnet, Modbus and KNX. |
| Belimo | Switzerland |
| Smart actuators and pressure-independent control valves with onboard BACnet/Modbus communications and energy-metering. |
| Priva | Netherlands |
| Strong in horticulture, hospitality and educational estates; native BACnet and Modbus. |
| Carel | Italy |
| OEM-focused chiller, heat-pump and rooftop controllers with BACnet, Modbus and Carel protocols. |
| Alerton (Honeywell) | United States |
| Open-BACnet platform aimed at the partner channel; tight ties to Honeywell HVAC plant. |
| KMC Controls | United States |
| Native BACnet with cloud-managed Commander platform for smaller commercial sites. |
| Iconics (Mitsubishi Electric) | United States |
| SCADA-class supervisor often deployed as a BMS head-end on large estates and campus environments. |

How To Choose A BMS Manufacturer
There is no single 'best' BMS manufacturer — there is only the best fit for your estate, partner network and protocol policy. The questions that decide it are: who already supports the building, which protocols are you committed to (BACnet/IP is by far the safest long-term bet), and how open is the engineering tool needed to make changes.
Trend dominates commercial real estate by install base. Tridium / Niagara dominates new-build multi-vendor projects because the framework is hardware-neutral. Siemens and Schneider win where the same vendor is supplying the HVAC and electrical infrastructure. Honeywell now owns Trend, Tridium and Alerton — so what looks like three competitors is increasingly one.
Open vs Proprietary Controllers
Every controller in this list speaks BACnet, but not every controller is open. 'Open' means a third-party engineer can take over support without paying the original supplier for software licences or training keys. Niagara, Reliable Controls, Distech, Delta and Cylon are practically open. Trend, Siemens Desigo and Schneider EBO require a licensed partner.
If protecting tender competition over the lifetime of the building matters, write 'BTL-listed BACnet Building Controller (B-BC) with no licence required for service tools' into the specification.
